The right tool depends on what has to happen after the storm appears: verify it, study the swath, document a claim, or put a route-ready list in a sales rep’s hands.

What makes a hail map useful to a roofing crew?

Weather accuracy matters, but usefulness is a workflow question. A roofer should evaluate six things: when the data arrives; whether it represents a public observation or a modeled radar swath; how far back the history goes; whether the map works at street level; what property or route information comes with it; and whether the output supports canvassing, claim documentation, or both.

The last question is the one feature grids often miss: what happens after the map opens? If a manager still spends an hour translating a weather layer into a drive list, the map solved the weather question but not the crew-handoff question.

Best free starting point: NOAA and local NWS reports

The NOAA Storm Prediction Center daily reports and local National Weather Service storm products are the honest place to begin. They provide public observations without a software subscription. If you chase a few nearby storms, understand the limitations of point reports, and have time to build the rest of the workflow yourself, they may be enough.

Their limitation is not legitimacy. It is packaging. A public observation does not automatically become a saved service area, threshold-based alert, property list, street concentration summary, or morning route. It also does not prove that a particular roof was damaged.

A point report, a radar-estimated swath, and a distance tier answer different questions. A point records an observation near a location. A swath estimates a storm footprint. A distance tier helps organize nearby addresses. None of those is a roof inspection, and a circle around a report should not be presented as the exact edge of damage.
